Costa Rica welcomes more tourists than ever before

Costa Rica welcomed 2.6million visitors in 2015. For a country with a population of 4.8million, this is a staggering achievement.
According to the Costa Rica Tourist Board (ICT), the tourism sector employs around 600,000 people in Costa Rica and was responsible for $2.8 billion revenue in 2015, a $246million or 9% increase over 2015.
The U.S. accounts for around 40% of all international visitors, with 1,077,044 US visitors to Costa Rica in 2015. According to the ICT, the average U.S. visitor stays around 11 days and spends an average of $1,340.
Almost 400,000 visitors traveled from Europe last year. This is expected to increase in 2016 with the new direct British Airways flights from the United Kingdom.
So what does this mean for medical tourism in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is one of the most popular destinations for medical tourism for U.S. visitors
Medical tourists are confident to visit Costa Rica because –
  • Costa Rica has worked hard to have the infrastructure in place to welcome a huge number of international visitors each year
  • Costa Rica is a safe destination to visit with an increasing number if tourists year on year
  • Costa Rica is a beautiful place to rest, relax and recover from any surgery or treatment – definitely an attractive destination for medical tourism
