Hysterectomy
SUMMARY
- A Hysterectomy is a procedure to remove the uterus or womb. The uterus is the organ located in the pelvis that responds to hormones during the menstrual cycle to shed blood and tissue to form the menstrual bleeding, it also carries a baby when a person is pregnant. If you have a hysterectomy, you will not have menstruation nor be able to get pregnant again.
DURATION
- This procedure lasts around 60 minutes
APPROACHES
- Laparoscopy: this is the most recommended approach since it has the lowest rate of complications and the fastest recovery rate. It is performed through a small cut in the belly button (0.5 in) and 3 to 4 accessory cuts (0.2 in) at each side of the lowest part of the abdomen.
- Abdominal: it is performed through a horizontal cut made in the lowest part of the abdomen, around 5 in, right above the pubic hairline. It’s usually the fastest approach, it requires dissolvable stitches or staples.
- Vaginal: it is performed specially when the womb is prolapsed and small, it has one of the fastest recovery rates and the stitches are not visible.
Depending on your needs and medical conditions, the doctor will indicate which approach fits you best
Salpingectomy – Surgical Sterilization
SUMMARY
- This is a procedure to remove part of the Fallopian tubes. The Fallopian tubes are the organs located at each side of the uterus or womb that transport the egg from the ovary to the uterus, this is the place where fertilization occurs. If you have a salpingectomy, you will not be able to get pregnant by natural means anymore.
