A Gastric Band or Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (LAGB) or lap band is a surgery performed to help weight loss. An inflatable silicone device is surgically implanted around the top portion of the stomach to form a pouch which can only hold a small amount of food. The narrowed opening between the stomach pouch and the rest of the stomach controls how quickly food passes from the pouch to the rest of the stomach. This system helps the patient eat less by restricting their food intake and increasing the amount of time taken for food to be digested. After surgery the lap band can be adjusted to allow food to pass more quickly or slowly through the stomach, depending on the patient’s needs.
